A bowel movement every third day is not outside the realm of normalcy, but stools should not be so hard that relieving oneself is a strain. Be sure you are:
Eating enough fiber
Exercising
Drinking 8-10 glasses of water per day
Constipation is listed as a side effect of most drugs. Be sure to discuss this with your doctor before taking or discontinuing any medications.
Here is a recipe that can help relieve constipation:
2 cups bran
2 cups apple sauce
1 cup unsweetened prune juice
Mix together and refrigerate. Eat two to three tablespoons twice per day. Other ingredients may be added and this mixture can be used as a topping on other foods.
